Chronicling the last day prior to societal lockdown, and their subsequent digitally-led academic term, F20 is a physical celebration of the expertise, virtue and tenacity of RCA’s 2020 Fashion graduates.
Documenting their final pieces, course workshops, creative interviews and more, F20 acts as an interactive time capsule – an archive of the time they were in and their place within that time. Translating the emotion and sensitivity missed due to the virtual nature of their final months, we composed an editorial system that seemed both sparse and busy; doubling down on the publication’s tactility to the extent where it becomes an object in its own right. Embodying a poetic, experiential, and physical entity more indicative of an exhibition than a book.
Wrapped in a ripstop dust jacket – screen-printed with the sketches of the course leader’s explanation of the past year – subtle print finishes and a tangible focus on material choice, F20 housed a delicate epitome of the era directed by the object’s physicality. With blind embossing used to reference the notion of unseen, or differing, perspectives, this refined retrospective tone was achieved whilst maintaining a fundamental sophistication in line with the expressive work discussed throughout – led by a confidence in the value of the message and the simplicity in telling it.
